Outstanding mathematics and science teachers were honored with the prestigious presidential award at a special ceremony held at Independence Hall in Washington, D.C. last month. Woodcliff Lake teacher Julia Ogden, center, stands here with Dr. John P. Julia Ogden, who has been teaching science at Woodcliff Middle School for 14 years and facilitates the schools environmental club, was one of 213 teachers who earned the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The math and science educators of students in Grades K 12 from across the country received their awards at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 8. “The Presidential Award is a great honor,” Ogden said. “Aspiring to this award challenged me to develop the very qualities that I wish to instill in my students to continually develop critical thinking abilities which enable us to make informed decisions based on evidence; to be reflective in my thought process; and to constantly improve on what I have done.” Ogden has participated in many professional learning institutes, such as the Maitland Simmons, the New Jersey Audubon, and the Honeywell Institutes, bringing that learning experience back to the students and her fellow educators through workshops and New Jersey Science Convention presentations. “Receiving this award is affirmation from outstanding educators that I have inspired and motivated my students to become lifelong learners,” said Ogden, who has been previously celebrated locally as “person of the year.” Ogden holds a bachelors degree in psychology from Ramapo College and earned her teaching certification from Felician College. “The recipients of this award are integral to ensuring our students are equipped with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are vital to our nations success,” Obama said. “As the United States continues to lead the way in the innovation that is shaping our future, these excellent teachers are preparing students from all corners of the country with the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills that help keep us on the cutting-edge.” Winners of the award were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process at the state level. The honorees received a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion.
